Birds

Hey everyone!! Today I am writing about abused birds.  First off, PLEASE donate to my fundraiser . I am really hopeful that we can get there and really help out these poor birds who don't have homes. No laws are in place to protect them, so we really need to get that word out. If you have a social media account or a blog(Hi fellow bloggers!), please share or repost that link. The publicity would really help me out.  Why, you ask, should I donate? Here's why. These birds are kept in cages. A vet who went in described it as a "concentration camp". There are pictures. Yet, despite this evidence, this breeding facility is still open in Washington State. These facilities are like puppy mills; forcing animals to breed against their will, and continuing to sell them just for money. This is in no way a good practice and it needs to be stopped. I really hope you can help me save these birds!  -AnimalFanatic  :)

Special Edition: Pets Around the Holidays!

Hi everyone!! Happy Holidays! So, many holidays are coming up, and all of them have their own great traditions. Sometimes, though, those traditions aren't great for pets. Here's a rundown of the things that might be a problem. Foods Decorations Flowers Presents-Wrappings and the presents themselves Snow(If you get snow) A tree(if you have one)  All of these things can be a really fun part of your tradition, and I don't want you to have to give those things up!  Ok. Dogs and cats are allergic to, or love but can't handle many things we have around the house. Here's a list. Chocolate Onions/Shallots/Green Onions/etc. Grapes Raw Chicken/Turkey Bones Poinsettias Wrapping Paper Christmas Trees(solely cats-dogs are okay, so long as they won't knock the tree over or break anything) Lactose That last one may have you confused. Most dogs and cats are actually lactose intolerant. So, please, no ice cream, scalloped potatoes, pudding, all of that. Maybe your cat or dog is

SeaWorld Should End Now!

Image
Hey everyone! Today I am going to talk(type?) about SeaWorld. No one should have the right to imprison orcas, dolphins, and other aquatic animals in tiny cages. Below are all of the reasons why you can't do this. The Tanks Are Miniscule! The largest  tank at SeaWorld Orlando is 40 feet deep. Sounds great...Until you remember that that is the LENGTH OF THE ORCA!!! You shouldn't keep a goldfish in a tank 2 inches deep, so why would you do the equivalent for an orca? Also, there are some really 'wonderful'*cough, nope, cough* size comparisons to the tanks. Ok, look at this photo. The parking lots are bigger than the orca tank! Really, SeaWorld? Really? Credit to PETA for the photo-and all others that come after. One city block is twice the length of one orca tank. ONE! And it's the LARGEST one!! The distance that toddlers walk in a day is about 2.6 miles. That dwarfs the tanks, being 13, 558 feet farther than a tank. A Polar Bear May Have Died Because They Ju

Special Edition: Family Dogs

Image
Hi! I am going to share some of my family member's dogs below, I hope you enjoy hearing about them! Nala: "She is a very loud yawner." "Her breed is golden lab x fox terrier." "She loves to play a lot, and she also loves to be lazy in the mornings. " "She enjoys watermelon, carrots and apples but does not care for cucumber peel." Buddy Chandramowle:   " Very Playful & was vigilant about his surroundings;Liked to travel in a car-took him all over Europe driving."  " I trusted his judgement about people-He was always more protective of me when he did not trust somebody[.]" German Shepherd Maxwell: "[H] e is a shih tzu crossed with American spaniel and Tibetan spaniel. " "He was a stray and we adopted him from a local animal shelter who found him near a marina.  The veterinarian who works with the shelter guessed his age based on his teeth and he was found to be about 2 or 3 when we adopted him. Red Pandas!

Image
Hi everyone! Today we are going to talk about red pandas! Red pandas are adorable(yay!) & endangered(no!). So, we need to support them. Today here to help me on this topic, Red Panda Network, RPN! Here  is the link to their website. They do great work, and I have adopted a red panda through their project.       I have completed their Red Panda Ranger challenges as well. They have multiple things going on right now, including their always going campaign for #NoPandaPets. Sadly, people try to get red pandas as pets. Or, they try to get fur, teeth, meat....Yeah, I'll stop there. You get the idea.  Red pandas deserve to be saved! Continuing with some facts. Alright, first off, the craziness. Red pandas are technically carnivores, but 95% of their diet is bamboo! I don't know how or why. The other 5% is berries, eggs, and insects. Secondly, they eat up to 30% of their body weight in bamboo every day! That would be like if you were 90 lbs, you would eat around 30 lbs of food eve

Animal Training

Hi! Today we will talk(read?) about animal training! I wrote a speech/essay thing that is below: Often, people think that animal training is bad for the animals, and only for human entertainment, but this is not necessarily true. Animals in zoos are taught to do certain behaviors, like target training, so that their minds stay active, and so that, in the case of certain behaviors, let veterinarians check them out or give them medication. I went to a 4-week day camp at Happy Hollow Zoo, and I learned all kinds of things about animal training. There are different things that you need animals to do. For example, vets give medications through shots sometimes, so in the case of a fossa or a jaguar, you need to be able to administer the shot without getting into the enclosure. This is where training comes in. They have trained the fossa to put its tail up to the fence, and stand still during the shot. They have trained the jaguars to open their mouths on command, so a vet can check them ou

Proper Cat Treatment

I am going to say, right off the bat, these are MY PERSONAL OPINIONS! I learned this from books and have also drawn my own conclusions. You can choose whether you want to believe me or not. Let's go. Please keep your cat inside. Do not let your cat be an entirely outdoor cat, do not have your cat be an indoor/outdoor cat. It will lead to your cat being caught by a coyote, being caught by an eagle, being hit by a car....at the very least, birds might not want to come near your yard. If you want to let your cat hang out outside, and your cat friend also wants to be outside, here are some compromises: Cat TV. Put a cat tree up in a window. Fill it with blankets, pillows and toys. Then, put a bird feeder outside that window. The cat can snuggle into the blankets and watch the birds all day. Passive activity. Walk your cat on a leash. No, I'm not kidding! It is hard, and can ONLY be done if your cat enjoys it, but it's pretty nice for the cat if they like it. Click  here  to le

Puppy Mills(in more detail)

Hi y'all! Today is puppy mill day!(Cue all the sad/angry faces.) I know, I know. But we need to get the word out. So....today is puppy mill day. Read on! Here is a list of states and the legislation around them: Alabama- none Alaska- none Arizona-  If a kennel has five or more dogs, it must be licensed and pay a $75 fee.  Inspections are mandatory if there are more than 20 dogs.  The regulatory agency is the Board of Supervisors of the County in which the kennel is located. Arkansas – none California – A breeder is defined as a person or business that has bred and sold all or part of 3 or more litters or 20 or more dogs during the past year.  Breeders are nor required to be licensed and there are no mandatory inspections. Colorado – A “Pet animal facility” is defined as any place that keeps pet animals for adoption, breeding, boarding, grooming, handling, selling, sheltering, trading, etc.  These facilities must be licensed and are subject to fees up to $350.  Inspections are cond

Quick update

Hi people! My friend is going to be writing some stuff too, so.. yeah. That's it. Have fun today!

New Subject Matter & Very Important News

Hi people! I am switching gears with this blog. This is going to be a blog about advocacy! Helping animals in need by sharing information. Ok, first off, please, please, please, donate to my GoFundMe! The link is  here , and I promise you it is for a good cause! I am donating to Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue. There are NO laws in place to protect companion birds. All the information you are about to read is true. Let's go. There is a bird breeding facility in Washington State. It is similar to a puppy mill. The vet that went in called it a "concentration camp". Reporters say that the birds were kept in,"cold, wet, filthy conditions for years". This breeding facility is still open, doing horrible things to the birds. (Information from PETA) Parrots are smuggled from their natural environments. According to PETA's website, smugglers are found with large parrots in the air vents of a car, or small parakeets or conures held in jacket pockets. Many smugglers ar

The Ocean

The Sea Hello, everybody. Today I am writing about the ocean, mostly the Pacific. And also mostly focusing on marine mammals because there are a lot of Ocean creatures. I’ll continue this topic for a couple of posts, hopefully encompassing a good amount of ocean animals. Let’s dive in! California Sea Otters These marine mammals are adorable members of their family. They are the largest in the weasel family, and the smallest marine mammal. They dive underwater to look for sea urchins. They also bring up rocks. They then lay the sea urchin (or clam) on their chests and slam the rock into it, showing that they are one of many animals that use tools to get food. Sea otters actually have a special flap of skin that they can hold the rock and their food in, and then tuck their arm close to their body, being hydrodynamic and holding their stuff. Elephant Seals: Elephant seals are gigantic! They are also fast, and can move fifteen feet in three flops! Go see them at Ano Nuevo, it is so worth

The Amazing Amazon

No, not the company. Hi! Today I am writing about the Amazon! There are so many amazing creatures, so let's dive in! Jaguar: Jaguars are part of the cat family, and their scientific name is Panthera onca. Jaguars have the strongest bite force of any big cat. They don't bite the neck, they crush the skull. They have amazing jumping abilities; zoos have documented jaguars jumping up to 10 feet high, and in the wild, they often drag their prey up that high. There are also black jaguars, just jaguars that have a slightly different genetic makeup, and have black fur. One regular jaguar mom can have one black baby and one patterned baby. Well, technically, the pattern is still there, but it's hard to see. Capybara: Capybaras are the largest rodent on earth. They have ever growing teeth, like a beaver, and they keep them sharp by having a hard layer in front, and a soft layer in back, like a pencil. That way, when they chew and gnaw, their teeth get sharper. They ar

Australia

Australia: A Continental Country Kangaroo: Kangaroos are mammals with uncanny kickboxing skills. They have a special way they stand on their tail so they can kick with both feet. They try to go for the belly, so consequently, red kangaroos developed a layer of padding there. The Australian Outback is super hot, so kangaroos dig into the cooler soil. They also lick their forearms to cool down. Female red kangaroos are bluish-gray, and babies, called joeys, are gray.  Dingo: Dingos are wild dogs that hunt in the Outback. They are orange-peach, and hunt in packs. Oddly enough, there are some dingos in Indonesia and other areas near there. Dingos prey on kangaroos. Kangaroos deal with that by putting their joeys in a pouch and running. The head male will fight the dingo, and attempt to drown it if they are near any water, which they will be if there is water to be found. Wallaby: A wallaby is pretty much a smaller version of a kangaroo. Wallabies have proportionally longer

Madagascar

Image
Madagascar: Land of the Lemurs Hi again! I will be posting about Madagascar, but first...... Shout-out to everyone!! Red pandas are not pets, do not support any companies that use red panda parts! Please! Visit  Red Panda Network  to learn more.  Fossas: Fossas are the apex predator of Madagascar. They are somewhat related to weasels. If you took a brown weasel, made it the size of a German Shepherd, and gave it longer legs, you have a fossa. Their ankles can rotate completely backwards, so they are completely at home in the trees. They are carnivores, and mainly prey on lemurs. They have to be good in the trees to catch those! Especially Sifaka lemurs! Lemurs: Lemurs are primates, which is a family that includes monkeys, lemurs, apes, and humans. They are quick in the trees and can navigate anywhere in them. How a fossa would catch them is to drive them to the ground. They are not super quick on the ground. There are 32 species of lemurs, which are all endemic to M

Bamboo Forests

Hi, today I will be writing about bamboo forests, in China. Bamboo is very well known for being the food of..... pandas! Pandas Pandas are not technically "endangered", but there are only about 1,864 left in the wild. They are amazing animals. They can eat bamboo, which is full of toxins, and is very hard to digest. However, they have a very short intestine, which made no sense to me until I learned that the microbes in their stomachs are very special. They are very fast acting, so that the panda can absorb the nutrients from the bamboo. Pandas also have five fingers, and no real thumb. A panda's wrist bone has grown larger and larger, so that they can hold bamboo easily. This wrist bone is the same one that would be at the very bottom of your thumb. However, pandas aren't the only ones who eat bamboo...... Red Pandas Red pandas are really cute, and look kind of like raccoons. Scientists used to think that they were related to weasels, then decided they were

Hi!

Hello! And Welcome! Hi! I am going to post as AnimalFanatic here. This is a blog about animals primarily, but also latest nature news. Here are some facts about me. I am an animal fanatic, I have three chickens, and I like to have friends. Okay, now on to the real stuff. First I would like to address the fact that you probably are only here because either I sent you the link(hi friends!), or, you randomly showed up here(hi to you too!). Either way, I hope you enjoy this.  My chickens eating pineapple core. Okay, so the theme today, is...........The Arctic! I will have theme every post that is one habitat, put the latest news, and maybe some of the latest chicken news. What can I say? I like my chickens. The Arctic is freezing cold. So, if you live there, you need LOTS of warm clothing, or fur. Arctic wolves manage this by having a double coat. If you have a corgi, a husky, a Shiba Inu, or an Akita, you know what I mean. They have thick, waterproof fur on the outside, and s
