Bamboo Forests

Hi, today I will be writing about bamboo forests, in China. Bamboo is very well known for being the food of..... pandas!

Pandas

Pandas are not technically "endangered", but there are only about 1,864 left in the wild. They are amazing animals. They can eat bamboo, which is full of toxins, and is very hard to digest. However, they have a very short intestine, which made no sense to me until I learned that the microbes in their stomachs are very special. They are very fast acting, so that the panda can absorb the nutrients from the bamboo. Pandas also have five fingers, and no real thumb. A panda's wrist bone has grown larger and larger, so that they can hold bamboo easily. This wrist bone is the same one that would be at the very bottom of your thumb. However, pandas aren't the only ones who eat bamboo......

Red Pandas

Red pandas are really cute, and look kind of like raccoons. Scientists used to think that they were related to weasels, then decided they were related to raccoons, and finally found out that they are in their own family, Ailuridae. They have a panda thumb, and climb around in the trees with agility, because of their claws. They also eat bamboo, as mentioned above. Red pandas aren't the only ones who perch in trees....

Golden Pheasant

Golden pheasants are birds, with showy colors for the males, and drab browns for the females. The females are drawn to the most colorful male, and the male does a mating dance, somewhat like a peacock. The males don't go under the sun often, so the UV rays won't fade their feathers.

The answer to the previous question.....

The answer is that there is a mass of water moving up the coast called, "The Blob." It is too warm and nutrient deficient. Some salmon get confused, and swim toward that, instead of swimming toward land. This is bad because salmon only really survive because of their numbers. The next question is, what type of plant is bamboo? Also, I have another one,"Why are pandas black and white with that distinctive panda pattern?"

Comments

  1. Red pandas are 'vegetarian carnivores'! They are classified as carnivores, but they mostly eat bamboo. I don't get it either. Take it up with the scientists, not me! :)

  2. Red Pandas are more like raccoons that pandas, is that correct?

  3. Um, yes and no, actually. DogFanatic, red pandas have their own family, as shown above. Scientists used to think that they were a type of raccoon, but they have ultimately decided that they are their own family. However, they are somewhat related to raccoons, and more so than pandas. Sorry for the long explanation, hopefully you understood all of that! =)
