Animal Training

Hi! Today we will talk(read?) about animal training! I wrote a speech/essay thing that is below:

Often, people think that animal training is bad for the animals, and only for human entertainment, but this is not necessarily true. Animals in zoos are taught to do certain behaviors, like target training, so that their minds stay active, and so that, in the case of certain behaviors, let veterinarians check them out or give them medication. I went to a 4-week day camp at Happy Hollow Zoo, and I learned all kinds of things about animal training. There are different things that you need animals to do. For example, vets give medications through shots sometimes, so in the case of a fossa or a jaguar, you need to be able to administer the shot without getting into the enclosure. This is where training comes in. They have trained the fossa to put its tail up to the fence, and stand still during the shot. They have trained the jaguars to open their mouths on command, so a vet can check them out.

However, there are instances where the training is just not good for the animal. To explain this, I will refer to the four types of training. 1. Positive Reinforcement, 2. Negative Reinforcement, 3. Positive Punishment, 4. Negative Punishment.  I realize ‘positive punishment’ sounds hypocritical, but hear me out. Positive, in this context, means adding something to the relationship, it does not mean ‘good’. So, positive punishment would be,”My dog isn’t sitting. Whenever she does that, I am going to hit her.” Not a good practice. Neither are shock collars, prong collars, and electric fences. Clicker training is much more effective.

It is also important to take advantage of an animal’s instincts. It is the instinct of a jaguar to open its mouth, so you can reward that behavior when they happen to do it after a signal, and they will figure it out faster, and it will be a healthier relationship between you and the animal. Making an animal to do something it is not supposed to do, or making it live somewhere it is not supposed to live, can hurt the animal mentally and physically.

The last thing I want to tell you is how to not mistreat animals when training, or even just by going somewhere. First of all, please never go to SeaWorld. I know it sounds cool, but it is an inhumane place for the dolphins and whales, and the trainers don’t take advantage of an animal’s instincts. It is much better to go whale-watching. Second, when you are training your cat or dog, you need to be positive. Make doing the behavior the optimal choice, but don’t punish them if they don’t do it, they just don’t get the reward. Never use a prong collar or a shock collar. People who sell prong collars will tell you they are fine if used correctly. This is flatly untrue. Prong and shock collars are inhumane and cruel.

So, that was the essay. All of this information is true. I hope you enjoyed reading this!
